1st Timothy Chapter 6

September 11, 2025

In this episode of I Don’t Get the Bible, Delaney and Shawn finish 1 Timothy with a wide-ranging conversation on slavery, inspiration, money, and the role of emotion in faith. They wrestle with Paul’s instructions to slaves, asking whether his words were divinely inspired or pragmatic responses to cultural reality. This leads into a broader discussion of how the Bible was canonized, why some books were excluded, and how Christians discern what is in harmony with God’s truth. They reflect on Luther’s discomfort with James and Revelation, and the difference between inspired scripture and writings that, while historical, may not carry divine authority.

From there, the discussion turns toward the dangers of equating emotion with spiritual truth. Shawn emphasizes that while emotions enrich human experience and creativity, they do not define who God is—truth must be grounded in study, faith, and renewal of mind and will. They also highlight Paul’s warning about wealth and greed, contrasting it with his affirmation that God provides for human enjoyment. The episode closes by noting the deep divide Paul makes between God—unseen and immortal—and Christ, who testifies before men, underscoring the challenge of understanding their relationship outside of man-made dogma.
