The LDS church officially became non-KJV-only today in English! There’s an article on their newsroom site and updated guidance in their general handbook. I’m immediately gifting my favorite active LDS person a modern translation. This is such a huge change for them that I’m glad to see.

I don’t think there’s any one right or wrong translation, but I am just happy to see them offer their members enough freedom to read other translations now without feeling like they’re going outside the approved boundaries, a thing many are too timid to do on their own.

So interesting! That’s brave of them, reading non-KJV was one of the paths that led me out of the church.

That being said, I need help with my heart because reading this update I couldn’t help but assign ill intent for them that they are trying to appear more palatable as Christians by doing this without truly changing the core of the doctrines because it was the combination of reading a non-kjv Bible AND dropping the lens of the church that truly opened my eyes to the sovereignty and sufficiency of Yeshua woven throughout it. I wonder if dropping the kjv only mindset will be enough for some in the church to open their eyes too or if it’s just another exterior change that will retain membership through the guise of being able to further justify their claims to Christianity.

Kim, as a former-LDS myself, who was in it with a specifically more antiquated and fundamentalist mindset even when I was in, I would say they certainly have been changing their actual doctrines as well as their culture to be more “mainstream Christian.” Maybe not all of the doctrines, and maybe not very quickly, but enough to catch my eye. The most significant one is that they will now worship Jesus and speak openly in terms of Worshiping him. That was absolutely forbidden in the Mormonism I was familiar with, specifically addressed famously by Bruce R. McConkie in this speech https://speeches.byu.edu/talks/bruce-r-mcconkie/relationship-lord/ that is available to listen to on their BYU website. I don’t agree with very many of the LDS doctrines, and I don’t agree with McConkie on most or many things. I think this is a change that would make most people happy, but I think its less Biblical, and actually idolatrous as it puts another God before YHWH (specifically since they think Jesus is a separate person from God) and yet it puts them perhaps in less tension with the rest of Christianity, so it is probably a socially good thing for them.

I think it’s great too, and might be a vehicle for people to come closer to truth from within the institution without as much difficulty!

@Kim I definitely have the same natural responses to these updates. As long as the institution is an institution, its actions will always be out of preserving that system rather than being to help people specifically. But that’s what makes this Yeshuan perspective more liberating for me – is that it recognizes that God allows all that has happened since Christ, and that he can use it all – good or bad. These systems will always serve themselves, and that does not limit what God can do with people within our outside of them!

Thanks for posting the update @Jeff!
